Why Helm WX for the Islands?
In the San Juans, weather and tides are inseparable. You need both — and Helm WX gives you both for free.
Critical

Weather + Tides Together

In the San Juans, opposing tide and wind create steep, dangerous chop. Helm WX is one of the only free tools that shows current tidal state alongside live weather — so you can plan your transit intelligently.

📡 Live Data

Live Data from Real Sources

Helm WX pulls from NOAA stations at Friday Harbor, the NDBC buoys off Cape Flattery, and voluntary ship reports in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Real conditions, not just model guesses.

The Most Technical Waters in the PNW

The San Juan Islands are a cruising paradise — and a navigation challenge. Over 170 named islands sit in waters where the Pacific Ocean tidal exchange creates current velocities that can exceed 5 knots through the major passes. Deception Pass, at the south end of the archipelago, regularly sees 8+ knots at spring tides.

Weather here is shaped by the Olympic Mountains to the south and the Cascade Range to the east. The islands sit in a rain shadow — often clear when Seattle is socked in — but the Strait of Juan de Fuca can pump 25-knot westerlies through the channels on summer afternoons. Wind-against-tide conditions in Rosario Strait and Haro Strait are notorious for short, steep seas.

Popular destinations like Roche Harbor, Friday Harbor, and Sucia Island are well worth the trip — but the passages between them reward careful planning. Helm WX puts the NOAA tide prediction for Friday Harbor right next to the live wind and wave data from the nearest buoy, so your passage timing is based on facts, not guesses.

Key Locations & Passes

  • Friday Harbor — Main hub, NOAA tide station
  • Roche Harbor — NW San Juan, popular anchorage
  • Sucia Island — State Marine Park, north exposure
  • Orcas Island — Deer Harbor, Eastsound
  • Deception Pass — 8+ kt currents at spring tides
  • Cattle Pass — Significant tidal race, SE San Juan
  • San Juan Channel — Heavy ferry traffic + current
  • Haro Strait — Whale watching corridor, west side
